Rating : 1/5.0 "Google: logitech 880 charging problems before you buy!!!" 2009-11-30
By Ella L. Robbins
I have had this remote for about 4 years now and have not been able to ditch my factory remote because the Logitech 880 doesn't set in the charger right and you think you have it on and it's charging but when you want to use it it's dead. The problem is the charging contacts on the remote don't make good contact with the contacts on the charger. Logitech is well aware of this problem and offers no help with a fix! That's why I will not buy another product from them. Dont just take my word on it.... Google it and you'll see.

Rating : 4/5.0 "Excellent but not Durable" 2009-11-27
By William S. D. Read
This remote really made the difference for my wife and me with our fairly complicated AV setup. Before getting this remote, my wife would not operate certain of our devices because the convoluted arrangement of inputs/outputs. Now my wife doesn't think twice about using the system, especially the Apple TV for music -- before this remote she wouldn't go near it.

After getting this remote, and setting up the devices, telling the remote what plugs in to where, it took only a couple of attempts at getting the remote to learn the exact sequences required to switch from one activity to another. After a few weeks of use, and by keeping some minor notes about how we use it, I was able to go back and optimize some of the screens to have our most used features handy. A good example is the compression feature on our surround sound. We often watch movies after the little ones have gone to bed, and our receiver offers a feature that allows you to use the surround sound, but compress the dynamic range so that you can hear dialog, but not get blasted out by the noisy parts of a movie. This is a feature that is normally buried in the menus, but a quick config brought it to the main screen.

The buttons on the remote do not seem to hold up over time. We have had ours now for three years, and we use it on average less than 2 hours per day. Certain of the buttons have slowly stopped responding to button presses, particularly the ones on the up/down-left/right center area, making the remote useless for many activities (the Apple TV in particular uses these for all navigation). If we were hard users, or if we allowed out kids to use it (we don't) I wouldn't think twice about this -- but we aren't. Having to replace a remote because the buttons don't work would be ok for a remote costing under $50, but one we paid $150 for three years ago is hard to swallow.

While the setup of the remote is daunting initially, it is actually quite easy. That said, unless you are the one who plugged everything in together on your system, and have a list of what is plugged into where, you will need to fully understand this before attempting to setup the remote. We have a Sony HDTV, a Sony DVD/CD 5-Changer, a Sony Surround Sound receiver, an LG HDTV Tuner/PVR, a GO Video VCR and an AppleTV. Of those, 3 of them use Component or HDMI outputs, plus digital audio output. In order for all of this to work with our surround sound and TV, all audio must go to the receiver, but only some video (because the receiver doesn't have enough video inputs of sufficient quality). So, the setup is a bit complex. One good note is that, despite our troubles with buttons recently, I have been able to re-program other buttons to take over the functions of the non-functioning ones.

In sum, I love this remote and what it has done in terms of making our entertainment center accessible to the rest of my family. But I am disappointed in the sturdiness of the buttons. I am in the market for a replacement, but thinking twice about getting a similar model.

I have a Harmony 880 remote which is experiencing physical hardware problems with some of the buttons. The volume + button doesn't seem to work reliably anymore. I have to press it extremely hard to have a button press register with the remote. I have had the remote over a year so I know my warranty is expired. This is a very well known problem it seems. I paid a lot of money for this remote and am deeply disappointed that is is having these type of design issues. I have used Logitech remotes for a number of years now and upgraded to this higher priced unit but never thought I would have these problems.

I have read about so many people having problems with the 'volume up' and 'channel up' buttons. It seems that it is only a matter of time for these buttons to fail. My recommendations are to NOT buy this remote. I have also heard of other Harmony remotes having similar problems. I have emailed Logitech but they refuse to acknowledge this design flaw and stand behind their product.

Don't believe me? Just Google '880 volume up' and check out all the different websites that people have posted on.

Rating : 4/5.0 "Awesome Remote still needs a better touchkey design" 2009-11-23
By S. Cendales (Cutler Bay, Florida)
Great remote but does not default to the most commonly used features of any remote. You must manually program these which is not too difficult but to make an impression to customers this should be easy to use right out of the box. Don't get me wrong. This is an awesome remote control. But more could have been done to make this the supreme remote. This is an almost supreme remote and I am happy with this purchase. Another issue is that some of the buttons are too small even for a womans hand with nails it could be just a tad bit larger. I myself have a tough time using my finger nail to press on the "device" key and left and right arrow keys. Just enlarge the picture and you will see how small they are.

I have had this remote for 2+ years.

I will keep it simple.

+ This is a very powerful tool able to do a lot.

- The button layout is poor. We still have to look at the remote.

- Using a computer interface to set-up is nice but not well implemented. There should be a novice and advanced mode. Using all the wizards all the time is a pain. The software doesn't work that well either. I can go through and program pages of extra buttons and hit DONE and it will not remember all the commands.

I want a new remote to replace it but I'm afraid to go with another Harmony.
